On May 26, the Siberian State University of Geosystems and Technologies held the results of the competition «Development of a Thematic Map Using Aerospace Methods». The event, organized by the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics under the supervision of Associate Professor Elena Stepanovna Utrobina, demonstrated the high level of training of students and their ability to apply modern technologies in cartography.

Students of the BK-31 group took part in the competition, presenting thematic maps created on the basis of Earth remote sensing data. The works covered various regions of the Russian Federation and solved current problems:

  • Automated decoding for analyzing the dynamics of landscape changes;
  • Assessment of environmental pollution;
  • Calculation of the area of greenery in urban areas.

The jury noted the three best works, the authors of which received diplomas:

  • First degree diploma - Ksenia Dementyeva (group BK-31);
  • Second degree diploma was awarded to Alexey Nesterchuk (group BK-31);
  • The 3rd degree diploma was awarded to Yesipova Kristina (group BK-31).
– Such events stimulate students’ research activities and help them master advanced geoinformatics technologies. The use of remote sensing data opens up new opportunities for cartography. Our students not only learn to work with modern tools, but also offer solutions for real problems of territorial planning,
– noted the competition curator Elena Stepanovna Utrobina.

The competition confirmed that SSUGT remains one of the leading universities in training specialists in the field of cartography and geoinformatics. The best works can be used in projects on environmental monitoring and natural resource management.
