On May 29, a team of students from the Siberian State University of Geosystems and Technologies presented a new development to the federal TV channel OTR - an automated system for assessing the condition of the road surface based on artificial intelligence.

The project, which interested reporters, is designed to radically change the approach to monitoring road infrastructure, replacing outdated manual inspection methods. Traditional methods, which require significant time and financial costs, often give subjective results. The new system allows you to:

  • Analyze the quality of the surface in real time;
  • Automatically record potholes, cracks and other defects;
  • Generate detailed reports for road services.

The development is especially relevant in light of the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 309, aimed at improving the quality of roads and optimizing budget expenditures until 2036.

The technological platform includes:

  • A hardware module based on Raspberry Pi 4 with a Pi Camera V2 camera and a GPS sensor;
  • A software package with computer vision algorithms for image analysis;
  • Web interface for data visualization and system management.

Main advantages:

  • Autonomy – works without a permanent Internet connection;
  • Speed – instant data processing;
  • Integration – compatibility with existing monitoring systems.

The developers have already applied for a patent and are preparing to present the project at the Siberian Venture Fair to find investors.

– Our system will help municipalities identify problem areas more quickly, reduce costs and increase the efficiency of repair work,
– the developers noted.

Experts note that such solutions can become the standard for «smart cities» of the future.
